Questions covered this week:

  • Looking for your insight on all this hullabaloo with matched or stereo pairs of microphones.  Does it really make a difference?
  • When did you switch to Studio One? And what was the reason?
  • When recording drum overheads in stereo, are there any advantages in using one stereo track vs two mono tracks?

What I’ve found out is that sometimes one of the two overhead mics will be out of phase with the snare, so if they were in one stereo track and i flipped it i still would get one side out of phase. So before converting the two OH tracks in one stereo track I always correct the phase first. Also there’s a plugin called PhaseBug with which you can manually turn the phase in a 360 degree circle. It’s useful to get the best possible phasing with it.
