Sennheiser Training

I don’t normally post event announcements, but this looks pretty cool. If you’re near Nashville, Mexico City, or Marin County, CA, check out these events being put on by the folks at Sennheiser.

I’ve always liked Sennheiser, and they’ve always done a fantastic job with any training events I’ve been to.

Pre-Order “Out of Indiana”

After much scrambling and decision-making, I’ve hit my deadline of pre-releasing my album today. After all, you’re apparently supposed to release new music on Tuesdays and Tuesdays ONLY. :-)

What does “pre-release” mean? Well, since this is obviously an independent release (meaning I’m paying for everything myself and there are no record labels involved), it’s fairly typical to see a pre-release before the album is officially released.

What this means for my album, Out of Indiana, is that the digital download of the full album is available now exclusively at my music website, joegildermusic.com.

On the official release date, September 14, 2010, the album will be available “worldwide” in places like iTunes an Amazon. That’s when the physical CD orders will start shipping, too.

All that to say, if you’d like a copy of my album, which was recorded and mixed entirely by me in my home studio, go grab your copy now and let us know what you think. Here’s the link again:

Why Doing Everything Yourself Might Be Lame

You know what they say, just because you CAN do something doesn’t necessarily mean you SHOULD.

There’s a common thread I see in the home studio world. A lot of home studio owners are musicians themselves. They record their own music. Sound familiar?

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a bunch of different hats in your home studio. That’s what I do on a daily basis. One second I’m belting out a lead vocal track, the next I’m comping, editing, and mixing the song.

And I’ll admit, I’ve got this idea in my head that people will be REALLY impressed with my music if I perform every single part. All the guitars, all the vocals, bass, drums, etc.

Is it impressive to be the “one-man band”? I suppose it is to a degree. But is it best for the music? Probably not.

The reason? I’m not a bass player. I’m not a drummer. I’m not a female vocalist. I’m not a lead guitarist.

Quick Tip: Keep Your Boxes

As most of you know, I moved this past weekend. So I’ve been living in the land of boxes for a while.

I was slowly piecing my studio together today. Things were rocking along, I had mostly everything hooked up. I was playing music at a ridiculously loud volume.

Life was good.

Then I tried to connect my Macbook to my new iMac to transfer over some files via firewire.

Ruh-roh…

2010 Goal Update: How Are You Doing?

Back on New Year’s Day I wrote a post about setting goals, and I also released my latest free eBook, Roadmap to Finishing Your Album. If you haven’t grabbed your copy yet, just sign up to my newsletter, and it’s yours.

In that post I talked a lot about setting deadlines for yourself, and how these deadlines will push you to get specific things accomplished.

Well, I’d like to share with you my progress thus far. See above picture. Yeah, I missed a couple deadlines. So why am I showing you this? Because if I hadn’t set those deadlines, I’d be much further behind than I am.

My First Radio Interview [Audio Clip]

Unbluckling the Beltway

Last night I did a radio interview with Tim Hill, a buddy of mine from college. Tim hosts a political radio show on WEBR Fairfax in Washington, D.C. In addition to discussing all things political, Tim’s been focusing on topics of interest outside the political arena.

He’s been intrigued by Home Studio Corner for a while and thought it would be interesting to have me phone in as a guest.

Here’s a recording of the show. Keep in mind, the show was streaming on the internet, so the sound quality isn’t all that great.

Can’t see the player? Download the mp3 here. [21:35 - 9.9 MB] (Right-click and choose “Save as.”)

More Studio Tours

Welcome MatAfter posting the two video tours of my home studio last week (Part 1 and Part 2), Jon at Audio Geek Zine joined in the fun and posted a video tour of his home studio. Check it out. Good stuff.

This got me thinking. These video tours have become pretty popular, so let’s see yours!! If you have a camcorder, upload a tour of your home studio to YouTube and post a link to it in the comments section. If you don’t have a camcorder, head over to the Home Studio Corner Forums and upload some pics of your setup.

Come on, we’re all dying to see it.

Question: How do you like to learn things? (Please comment!)

studyingToday I’m taking a little break from the norm. I want to write just a little bit, and I want YOU to write a LOT.

Home Studio Corner is all about teaching you about recording and how to get better at it. What I want to know is how do you like to learn these things?

Do you prefer something in writing that you can read and really take in?

Do you prefer to watch a video of someone teaching you how to do something as they do it?

Do you prefer a more one-on-one consulting approach, where you can get in-depth training and all your questions answered?

Would you be willing to pay for training, if you knew it would help you make better recordings?

If you enjoy Home Studio Corner, I ask you this favor, please help me make it better by answering these questions. I really appreciate it!!
