FREE Music from Yours Truly

I emailed my newsletter subscribers yesterday about some exciting news regarding my upcoming album. As I mentioned the other day, the album is basically finished. I’m just ironing out artwork/CD details.

In the meantime, I want to give away a few tracks from the CD for free.

I’m using Noisetrade.com to distribute these free tracks. Noisetrade is an awesome free service based here in Nashville. I highly recommend it for you musicians out there.

To download your 3 free songs, just drop your email address in the widget below. As a reminder, these songs were all recorded and mixed in my home studio, using the same kind of equipment that you use. I’m really proud of this album, and I can’t wait for you to hear the whole thing.

Until then, enjoy these three freebies:

Update on My Album

Know what that picture is? That’s the master copy of my finished album. :-)

If you’ve been a part of Home Studio Corner for any length of time, you’ve heard me talk about my album for quite some time. And as I mentioned in The Magic of Finishing, it feels amazing to be done with this album.

Granted, the album artwork isn’t quite finished, and I have a handful of things to do now before the release date (TBD), but the audio portion of the album is done.

I’ve got all sorts of ideas for blog posts, podcasts, videos, etc., all dealing with things I’ve learned throughout the process of making this album, but for today I simply want to encourage you. If you’re in the middle of a seemingly endless album project, you WILL get there. Just keep doing the things you know you need to do, and ignore the stuff that doesn’t matter.

Trust me, it feels great to be finished. All the writers block, the song rewrites, pre-production, all the different takes, the editing, the mixing, the re-mixing, and then sending your “baby” to a mastering engineer….it’s all worth it.

I’ll be announcing more details later. If you want to mix this album yourself, you can start TONIGHT by joining MixWithUs.com. You’ll download and mix the multi-track audio files for the entire 10-song album. It’s pretty fun.

Alright, that’s it for now. Talk soon!

Should Musicians Give Their Music Away?

Today I finished up the last mix for my upcoming album. As I start the process of mastering, artwork, duplication, etc., the obvious question arises:

Should I give my music away?

Last month I wrote an article about pirating plugins which spawned a healthy debate. (As I write this, there are 147 comments on that one post.)

That post hit a nerve with a lot of you. Regardless of which side of the fence you fall on, I think we will all agree that the advent of digital products has changed things forever.

We can argue the point that you wouldn’t steal a lawnmower, so why would you steal a piece of software? … and I’ve made that argument plenty of times … but there’s still a disconnect. To go from 1 lawnmower to 1,000 would require many hours and dollars. To go from 1 digital item to 1,000 would require very little time or money. Just copy and paste, right?

The Digital Age

We’ve seen this affect the sale of music. People are able to easily access and reproduce music without spending a dime. Is it wrong to take a musician’s work and “steal” it without paying them for their efforts?

Ben Gortmaker Interview [HSC Podcast Special Edition]

I’m very excited about today’s podcast, featuring my good friend Ben Gortmaker.

Ben just released an incredible album called All’s Lost, All’s Found. And the best part? It was all recorded and mixed in his home studio. Make time to listen to this podcast. You’ll hear some great music and interesting discussion.

Ben is an independent artist out of Nashville. You can find out more about him and buy his new album at his website:

Mbox2 Mini + Reason = Finished Album

Front-Cover-Sinai-297x300You may remember that I posted about my brother-in-law’s upcoming album a few weeks ago. Well, today is the official release date. You can purchase it here:

The Sinai Alliance – Though the Darkness Hide Thee

It’s a rocking, eclectic collection of traditional Christian hymns, but done in a style like you’ve never heard before. Even if you’re not down with hymns in general, I think you should give it a shot. It’s good stuff.

Also, I sang lead vocals on track 4, and I mastered the album.

Why am I telling you about this? Well, first of all I want to support my bro-in-law’s music.

However, there’s a bigger point I want to make here.

Six month ago, while I was at Sweetwater, Joel (my brother-in-law) bought an Mbox 2 Mini and Reason 4 from me. He also bought some JBL LSR 2325 monitors.

That’s it.

Six months later, Joel is releasing this album. Six months later.

My point? You don’t need to buy super-fancy equipment to make an album. Joel used the Mbox 2 and all the stock Digi plug-ins along with Reason to create and mix the entire album.

I’m not downplaying the fact that big studios allow for you to make great recordings, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a great-sounding album from home.

Go buy the album. It’s like $7.

FREE MUSIC – The Sinai Alliance Sampler EP

Today my brother-in-law Joel released a free live EP of his upcoming album. The band is “The Sinai Alliance,” and the name of the album (set to release in October) is “Though the Darkness Hide Thee.”

It’s an album of traditional Christian hymns, but they’ve been done in a way you’ve never heard before. It’s like hard rock meets hip-hop meets surfer music meets church.

I helped Joel a bit with mixing the album. I mastered the EP and am working on mastering the full-length album right now. Also, I sang lead vocals for the song “Come Thou Fount,” which is included on the EP.

To get your free copy (which is being distributed by NoiseTrade), simply fill out the form below with email addresses or five friends who you think might enjoy the music. They won’t be contacted by either Joel or NoiseTrade, and you’ll get to download the EP for free!!

What Are You Listening To?

We spend a lot of time on Home Studio Corner talking about recording and how to get good recordings. However, it’s a good idea to be on the other end of the spectrum, to be constantly listening to new music. One could argue that listening to recordings done by other people is just as important as practicing your own recording skills.

There will always be someone out there who’s better than you. Make sure you’re listening to their work. Enjoy their work, learn from them, apply their techniques to your own work. It’ll make you better.

So, what are you listening to?

I’ll start. Over the weekend I bought Erin McCarley’s latest album, “Love, Save the Empty.” It’s great. She has a nice, jazzy voice to go along with some catchy tunes. And the production on this album is amazing. Even if you’re not into big, extravagant, polished production, this is still worth a listen.

Okay, your turn. Leave a comment.
