I’ve been hinting around this for a few weeks now, and I think it’s time that we go for it.
As you probably know, I’ve begun mixing my latest album. Everything was recorded in my home studio, and I plan to mix the entire thing in my home studio as well.
You may be asking yourself, “Okay, so what’s in it for me?” Well, the closer I got to mixing this record, the more I realized this would be a great teaching/learning experience for the HSC crowd.
So…
Mark Your Calendars
On Monday, March 29, 2010, I will be launching a brand new website. It will be a members-only site, where you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how I mix my album.
If you’ve ever wanted to “sit in” on a mixing session and see how somebody else goes about mixing an entire record, then you’ll want to be a part of this.
I’ll be posting in-depth videos, ranging from 1-2 hours in length, where I show you all the steps I took to mix each song.
Not only that, I’ll be providing the full, 24-bit multi-track audio files of each song! You can download them, import them into your DAW, and “follow along” at home.
The album is 10 songs, so we’ll be going over one song per week for 10 weeks.
In addition to the videos and multi-tracks, I also have several bonuses planned for members. I’ll tell you more about them later.
I am so excited about this. I hope you’re as excited as I am. This is going to be a BLAST.
This mixing course won’t be free, but I think you’ll like the price. You’ll be getting a bucket-load of value out of it.
What’s my music like?
Obviously, you’ll want to know what kind of music/tracks you’ll be downloading and mixing. You’ve probably heard some of them here on HSC. It’s mainly acoustic guitar-based rock. The production ranges from acoustic/vocal only on one song to a full out rock arrangement on several more. You’ll get some pretty versatile content to work.
To kick things off, I’ll be doing a free live streaming concert on UStream this Saturday, March 27, at 5 pm CST. It’ll be an acoustic set of all 10 songs, and I’ll be recording the whole thing.
Here’s the link to the show:

So, to review: the concert is this Saturday at 5pm CST, and the mixing course will be opening on Monday. (I’ll give you the URL at a later date.

G’Day from Singapore,
Joe, love the idea – i had similar question to Rob in the UK as was wondering how it might work for those of us in different time zones. Actually i was initially interested in the production club but realised it wasn’t feasible for me given the time diference. So this new idea seems a beauty so long as we can go through it in our own time. Cheers, Justin
Yeah. The Production Club is the same way, too. You can go through it all on your own time, you just won’t be able to attend the coaching calls.
This is an amazing idea.
I’ll definately give a heads up to my Audio Production coursemates, this is just the sort of thing we could all do with!
Wicked jazzed for this!
Hey Joe,
This sounds very interesting!
I’m from the UK. would you be doing live streams a lot during the 10week process? I’m interested because we’re 5hrs ahead here and wouldn’t want to miss anything if you were to do a late, live seminar and we’re asleep :S
Thanks
Rob
Hey Rob!
There will only be a couple live Q&A sessions. Everything else will be on the site for you to work through at your own pace. Does that help?
Yeah! thanks joe!!
Joe,
Thanks so much for all the care you put into your site. The advice is always applicable. great stuff!
Looking forward to your mixing course!
Andy
Hi Joe,
Is it just me, or is the link missing after: “If you you want early-bird access, you can sign up here:”
I just get:

Thanks,

You have a pop-up blocker in your browser that’s hiding the form.
This will be good! music engineers use different strategies depending on the song they are mixing. Going through the mixes of your entire album with us defers from the HSC production club because it provides more possibilities in dealing with other obstacles we may encounter
Exactly. The Production Club goes through the whole process of producing, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering a single song. This will be focused exclusively on mixing. A birds-eye view of mixing an entire record.
That’s all I needed to know! I’m in Joe, thanks for understanding & thanks to Mo for “breakin’ it down!”
Do you really mean CST ? Or CDST as we on the Pacific Coast are now PDST. I think you’re someplace that doesn’t switch times, so it might be good to clarify this so it doesn’t get missed by an hour…
Umm…I guess I mean CDST. Aren’t there only like 1 or 2 states that don’t do daylight savings?
Either way, we do here in Nashville, if that helps.
Ok-
5 PM CDST
6 PM EDST
4 PM MDST
3 PM PDST
10 PM GMT
Just a thought…This sounds great, but how does it differ from what we’ll be learning in the HSC Production Club? I only ask because I am a member of the Production Club and I don’t want to pay twice for the same thing. I’ll be tuning into the concert though!
Hey Dwayne, great question. Check out Mo Rockin’s comment and my response to him.
This is gonna be very awesome Joe, can’t wait until Monday!
See ya Saturday, we’re makin’ plans to watch the online gig.
Let’s hope it all goes off without a hitch.
Hey Joe – did I miss the chance to join HSC?
I’ve got Pro Tools working and got my first song recorded and mixed. Pretty rough I’m sure but I’ll consider it my baseline for what I’m about to learn! Thanks again for your help.
Terry
Hey Terry!! So glad you’re up and running with Pro Tools. Enjoy Understanding Pro Tools!
And no, you haven’t missed the next Production Club launch. It will probably be late April/early May.
Thinking outside the box, nice.
I am really looking forward to it, one question remained what’s the price?
Good question. I’m still hammering out some details. I’ll let you guys know the price very soon.
This is an amazing opportunity! I can’t wait for monday!
My only question is I’m not using ProTools but Logic but I guess they’re close enough don’t you think?
Thanx
Yeah. A lot of people in the Production Club are using something besides PT, and it’s gone really well.
I am so excited TOOOOO
