  1. Argh. All these videos are awesome. I can`t wait to finish this years exams, so I can finally spend all my time doing music and recording. I HOPE you are going to continue running the HSC Production Club come fall as well. Really want to join them, but have no time now.

  2. When you used your “little voice in the back of your head” voice, was that the Elizabeth Fitzpatrick voice??? :)

I can’t help but feel this post was inspired by our 5am recordings as I’ve noticed several takes differ from one another. ;P

  3. Great video! The importance of arranging can be very underrated sometimes, and its part of the reason I love using Logic so much – Logic is a brilliant arrangement software and I’ll always cut sections up and can quickly map out a rough version and change things on the fly before recording final takes and mixing etc.

I also find its good to save the arrangements as separate projects, especially when going to record the final takes, so that you can go back to your rough outlines and you haven’t lost anything and can quickly try out new arrangements and add/remove elements easily.

  4. joe, thanks for the priceless advice!
last week’s discovery of this site through a friend has reignited my love of recording and kicked away my procrastination at the same time!

i map out my songs in garageband. i make a couple software instrument tracks (because you can create labeled regions with nothing else in them). one is called “click map”, where i just map out the measures for each section. then, on the other track i work on the “chord map”, where i figure out every chord.

when pre-producing a song with this method, i just record each section once with my guitar, then it’s cut and paste until the structure’s up to snuff. when that’s ready and defined, i’ll work on recording a single take with my guitar.

    • Very cool approach. Glad to have you as a reader, Diego!!
