I’ve experienced this on both sides of the equation… as the artist waiting for a sound guy to get that new mic before he records the band, and as the engineer waiting till my new DI gets here. I’ve come to learn that experience (the only factor that really really matters) comes whether you have the new gear or not. In fact, recording on your old junky gear and figuring out how to make it sound great is BETTER experience than getting a better mic or DI and letting it do the heavy lifting.
