The other day, my wife wrapped a few Christmas presents for our 3-year-old boy Owen.
She put ‘em in his stocking over the fireplace. When he woke up from his nap, she asked him, “Are there any presents in your stocking?”
“No…” he said. Then he looked over at the stocking and saw a present sticking out of the top, and a HUGE smile spread across his face.
“Can I open it?!?”
“No, buddy. You have to wait until Christmas.”
And…he lost it. He just cried and cried.
This is the first year he’s realized that Christmas is coming, and he doesn’t understand why it’s not RIGHT NOW and why he has to wait.
1. Deep down we’re all 3-year-olds.
It’s been a few months since I’ve thrown an all-out tantrum, but I hate waiting just as much as Owen does. I hate it when things don’t go my way.
I hate that I’m not as good of a singer as I’d like to be. I hate that my timing on guitar gets pretty rough pretty regularly. I hate when I work for a few hours on a mix, and it just sounds awful.
And while I hate those things, I know they’re all temporary. I can practice singing and playing guitar. I can practice mixing. Better singing, playing, and mixing are in my future, just like Christmas is. It’ll get here eventually. I just have to wait and keep doing the right stuff.
Does that describe you, too?
2. Since we’re all 3-year-olds, I’m gonna cater to your inner child.
