Just today I diagnosed myself with a disease.

H.I.T.S. Syndrome.

It’s common, and deadly. And by “deadly” I mean it can kill all productivity.

It stands for Head In The Sand Syndrome, and it’s baaaaaad news.

If you…

  • Turn up the car radio when the engine makes a funny sound, you might have HITS Syndrome.
  • Never ask for feedback on your songs or mixes, you might have HITS Syndrome.
  • Choose to ignore problems rather than deal with them, you might have HITS Syndrome.

The good news is that it is 100% treatable. You just need a big ol’ helping of good, old-fashioned REALITY.

Let’s take running a business as an example.

I’ve been running Home Studio Corner full time since 2011. For the first few years, I learned as much as I could and applied what I learned. It worked. I thought I was a business genius. So I stopped learning from other people. After all, who is there to learn from once you’ve reached enlightenment? (Barf…I was such a tool.)

Then one day problems began showing up. A dropped ball here, a disappointed customer there. Revenues declining. The same old tricks not working like they used to.

My solution, being that I had a particularly aggressive case of H.I.T.S. Syndrome, was to find a hole in the ground big enough for my gigantic size-7-and-5/8 head and shove that sucker in.

“Ah…that’s better,” I said to myself. “If I can’t SEE the problems, then they must not be real.”

[Insert several years of pain here.]

Eventually I came around, realizing that my problems wouldn’t go away if I didn’t face them. So I slowly addressed them, one by one, which meant I had to actually LOOK at them.

That’s the thing. Reality is oftentimes a harsh and unforgiving turd. But if you don’t LOOK at it and deal with it, it only gets worse.

And you want to know the funny thing? Once I finally mustered up the courage to look at reality, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. As it turns out, I’m not the spawn of the devil or the world’s most incompetent business owner. I’m just a normal guy who makes plenty of mistakes and needs to methodically learn from them,

Who knew?

Why am I telling you all this? Because I bet you’re a lot like me. I bet you have things in your life you ignore, like maybe starting that home studio business, for example. You know it won’t be easy, so you ignore it altogether.

I get it, my friend. I really do.

But can I just say something? As someone who has done a lot of stupid things, I can assure you that starting a business was not one of them. It has been one of the most exhilarating adventures I’ve ever been on, full of ups and downs and in-betweens.

That’s why I launched a new course called Home Studio Business back in December. I wanted to share my journey in building my business, and I wanted to help you build yours.

We’re on Module 6 over in the members area, and I just posted a video that talks about HITS Syndrome and six other pieces of business Kryptonite. I talk about a lot of failures and lessons I’ve learned along the way, and I share with you some hard-earned wisdom on how to navigate them.

I’d love to help you take a few brave steps towards having that dream business.
