My buddy Tim is a fan-freaking-tastic drummer. He also has all these funny little phrases he’ll say to poke fun at other folks in the band.

Stuff like:

* Man, you never seem to amaze me.

* I really like what you were going for there.

* Always a pleasure playing against you.

It makes me giggle every time.

And it reminds me of what a big role humor plays in everything I do in the studio.

I was mixing a song the other day for a client, and I solo’d the vocal for a minute and listened to all the goofing around we did between phrases or at the end of a take. It was hilarious.

I can be a world class idiot in the studio. Mostly, it’s because that’s just the way I am, but it’s also very intentional.

If you’re not having fun, you’re not going to perform well.

I’m constantly trying to ease the tension and relieve pressure when I record with people.

It applies to mixing, too. Even if you’re like me (you mix all alone in your studio), if you’re not having fun, you won’t get good results.

I had a blast mixing this month’s song for Dueling Mixes, and you can too…even if it’s not a genre you would typically mix.
